The Pinwheel Triangle is intended to be a new vibrant multi- development of offices, retail and residences extending Beirut’s city grid to the waterfront. Lighting plays a key role in communicating the unique identity of the site, its historic layers, connection to the sea and links to the city center. The lighting design goes beyond the given site and considers the urban context and well as the intended public use and architectural aspirations of each space.
The key objective is to produce a new development model in Beirut, ensuring visual balance and promoting lighting quality. Key architectural features are enhanced contributing to the unique night time identity of the Pinwheel Triangle development.
The facade lighting proposals consider shading due to the climatic conditions, views and topography as well as the local identity and Islamic heritage. Lighting design is used as a tool to connect the buildings and landscape to the surrounding urban context. The warm and cool lighting of the adjacent Mosque and minaret are replicated onto the towers of the Pinwheel Triangles creating a visual connection between old and new.
The Babylon gardens at the tower rooftops are elevated public spaces with bridges connecting the towers and offering panoramic views of the city and seafront. The lighting design approach for the exterior that less is more. The lighting for both ground floor and rooftop gardens is kept at low levels and is integrated into trees canopies, furniture and other landscape features.
Sustainability is a key consideration for both interior and exterior lighting applications. Generous use of daylight is introduced wherever possible and architectural lighting is acting as a filler. The facades are lit form within and a perimeter lighting zone in the offices helps identify the towers at night. Energy efficient light sources, luminaires and smart controls system ensure that lighting is used when and as required to allow for both energy saving and optimum performance.
